Description

Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in cobalt blue with a central cartouche enclosing the Crucifixion — Christ on the Cross flanked by the Virgin and St. John, the city walls of Jerusalem beyond — surrounded by the Arma Christi, or Instruments of the Passion, including the ladder, spear, nails, scourge, lance, crown of thorns, hammer, pincers, and the cock on a column. The border decorated with scrolling foliage and floral motifs in alternating dark and light cobalt tones.

The composition reflects the strong devotional tradition of Catholic Delft in the later seventeenth century, before religious imagery declined under Reformed influence. The “Arma Christi” plates were made in small numbers and may have served as private devotional objects rather than tableware, intended for the home altar or a chapel.
The distinctive treatment of the border — with open floral scrolls and stylised tulip-heads — and the slightly greenish-white glaze are consistent with Delft workshops active around 1680–1700, possibly De Metaale Pot (the Metal Pot factory) or De Paauw (the Peacock).
