Description
Robust oak carcase of rectangular plan with a strongly raked, hinged lid forming a writing slope; the whole clad with wrought-iron strapwork fixed by domed rivets, with fishtail terminals, corner plates and transverse binding straps to the base. Pierced wrought-iron escutcheon to the front, original drop-ring side carrying handles on shaped backplates, and forged strap hinges to the lid. Stepped base moulding and a narrow ovolo to the lid edge; surface with a dry, early colour and honest wear.
Designed as a portable writing desk / document coffer, used by merchants, clerks or guild officials for papers, account books, inkhorns and valuables. Iron banding provided security and durability for travel; the sloped lid gave a serviceable writing surface when set on a table or chest.
