Description

Painted in manganese, yellow, and iron oxide on a white tin-glazed ground, the centre depicting a milkmaid seated beneath a cow, milking into a pail within a stylised pastoral landscape. The scene is framed by a manganese geometric border of interlacing scrolls, a decorative motif typical of Delft production in the late 17th century. The reverse is plain tin glaze with spur marks from stacking in the kiln.

This type of rustic subject, often showing peasants, animals, and daily labours, derives from popular Dutch prints of the period, reflecting the Golden Age taste for genre scenes celebrating rural life. The palette and border style relate closely to examples from De Porceleyne Schotel and De Metaale Pot factories in Delft, as well as Haarlem workshops producing wares for domestic use and export.
