Description
An elaborately carved walnut panel, the composition centred on a reclining nude female figure within a scrolling strapwork cartouche, almost certainly an allegory of Venus or a classical nymph, embodying ideals of beauty and fertility. Flanking her are two hybrid figures with human torsos, wings, and beast-like lower bodies, each accompanied by playful putti.
These winged hybrids are not angels but belong to the rich vocabulary of Renaissance grotesque ornament, recalling sphinxes and sirens of antiquity. They function symbolically as guardians, liminal beings that combine the alluring and the monstrous, while the putti soften their presence with a playful, amorous quality.
