Description

A fine Brussels faïence jug with a deep cobalt-blue ground, the front and sides painted with shaped white reserves. One panel depicts a rustic figure in a yellow dress and hat standing among flowering plants, while others show floral sprays within star-shaped reserves. The rim is decorated with a colourful geometric border, and the jug retains its original pewter-mounted hinged lid. The body displays the characteristic rich blue crackled glaze of Brussels pottery of the 18th century.
This type of faïence, produced in the Brussels potteries during the mid-18th century, reflects the influence of both French rustic figure painting and the strong cobalt-blue tradition of Delftware, but with a distinctly Belgian flair. Pieces of this quality and preservation are rare survivals.

This Brussels faïence jug, dating to the mid-18th century, would have been used in a prosperous household for serving ale, cider, or wine at the table. Such pieces were owned by well-to-do burghers and affluent rural families, combining everyday practicality with decorative appeal.
