Description
A group of four Renaissance brass pricket candlesticks, each with circular base, knopped and moulded stem, and original wrought iron pricket. Standing up to 13 ½ inches in height, these candlesticks represent the distinctive late Gothic–early Renaissance style produced in the brassfounding workshops of Nuremberg during the first half of the sixteenth century.
Nuremberg was Europe’s leading centre of decorative brass casting at this date, its workshops exporting altar candlesticks, alms dishes, and other ecclesiastical furnishings across the continent. The robust forms and sharply turned mouldings seen here are typical of this output, combining Gothic verticality with the balanced proportions of the emerging Renaissance style.
Candlesticks of this type were intended for altar use, where the tall wax tapers they supported symbolised the light of Christ. When displayed in groups, their flames created a visual expression of divine presence and order, reinforcing the harmony of the liturgy and the architecture in which they stood.
While these four are not an original set, their close stylistic relationship underlines the consistency of Nuremberg production, making them an impressive and coherent group for display.
