Description
A rare and important set of four Elizabeth I carved oak capitals, each boldly carved with a Renaissance cartouche enclosing a standing putto, flanked by scrolling foliate ornament and flowerheads. Above each capital runs the carved date 1578, albeit executed upside down—an idiosyncratic touch reflecting workshop practice.
The design reflects the influence of continental Renaissance ornament, introduced to England through pattern books and court commissions during the reign of Elizabeth I, yet translated here into robust vernacular oak carving. Putti, long associated with classical rebirth and divine protection, embody both humanist and sacred overtones, making these capitals as much symbolic as decorative.
The date of 1578 places the carvings firmly within the height of Elizabeth’s reign, a year marked by international diplomacy, courtly display, and the growing confidence of English Renaissance art. Surviving, dated architectural fragments from this period are exceedingly scarce.
Provenance: From the private collection of Robert and Rachel Byles.
