Description

A finely proportioned sloping desk box of boarded oak, the front and sides carved with a continuous nulled arcade beneath a moulded cornice. The hinged lid with sloping fall front, the interior fitted with an unusually thick backboard and evidence of a former sliding mechanism, most likely serving as a concealed compartment. Retains its original iron lockplate and clasp. The architectural character of the carving — echoing contemporary church arcading — reflects the Jacobean taste for order and classical stability, while the sloped form indicates use as a portable writing desk. Such boxes were the preserve of literate households of means, and examples with secret compartments are particularly scarce.

These were designed to be placed on the lap of the sitter, or on the table before him, and often of a convenient and portable size: Victor Chinnery, Oak furniture the British tradition.
