Description
A superb and imposing Elizabethan oak overmantel, carved with two pairs of arcades supported on fluted columns, flanked by broader pilasters, and surmounted by a dentil-moulded cornice. The arcades are enriched with roundel and strapwork detail, emphasising the classical influence on late Tudor domestic design.
The surface retains painted and gilded decoration added during the 18th or early 19th century, when there was renewed interest in historic interiors and the re-use of Tudor and Jacobean architectural elements. This later finish not only preserves the form but also illustrates the long history of appreciation and reuse of Elizabethan ornament in Britain.
At nearly 7½ feet wide, this is a major survival of Elizabethan domestic carving, reflecting the grandeur of East Anglian merchant houses of the late 16th century. Its scale, classical vocabulary, and layered decorative history make it a highly important piece of architectural furnishing.
