Description

Elizabeth I oak carved tester bedstead. The carved headboard with two large applied arcaded panels each with botanical and mythical imagery flanked by ‘Atlantes’ above this two huge carved griffin / serpent beasts flanked with corbels. The canopy with a huge central boss with a male figure in the centre, surrounded with carved panels. The huge cup and cover posts with gadrooned and leafy designs, above this the lunette and egg and dart frieze rails.

Provenance: Private Cotswolds collection

A high status bedstead made for a high status owner and house, impressive then and very impressive now.
