Description
A fine and substantial carved oak panel, originally the front of an Elizabethan chest and later repurposed as an overmantel. The panel is organised into four bold arcaded bays with applied pilasters, the spandrels enriched with stylised palm leaves and feathered ornament. Above runs a continuous frieze of scrolling foliage terminating in volutes and centred by a small shield, while the lower rail is carved with a rhythmic series of lunettes.
The design reflects the Renaissance taste for order and classical vocabulary as absorbed into English vernacular furniture around 1600. The arcaded treatment, with its repeated architectural forms, recalls contemporary plasterwork and stone decoration, while the vigorous gouge-cut ornament situates it firmly in the West Country carving tradition.
