Description
A fine and unusual small boarded oak box, richly carved to the front, sides, and lid with strapwork designs centred by a stylised flower. The box retains its original purpose-made stand, with baluster-turned legs joined by plain stretchers, allowing the box to be displayed or removed as needed. The survival of both elements together is exceptionally rare.
The distinctive strapwork carving, vigorous yet controlled, is characteristic of the Exeter and Devon region in the later 17th century. This was an area strongly influenced by Dutch immigrant craftsmen, who introduced continental forms and ornament into local workshops. The present piece reflects that fusion of English vernacular construction with Dutch decorative vocabulary.
Boxes of this type served both practical and display functions — secure receptacles for valuables or documents, yet also decorative furnishings that demonstrated the owner’s taste and prosperity. The detachable stand elevates this example beyond the ordinary, underlining its dual role as both container and showpiece.
