Description
A rare late Stuart pewter candlestick, the stem with plain central ball knop between fillets and narrow bands, rising to a cylindrical socket above a spreading base with square-cut corners. The form is understated yet robust, combining functional clarity with the restrained elegance typical of late seventeenth-century English domestic metalwork.
Unlike brass or bronze examples of the same period, pewter candlesticks are now exceptionally rare survivals, owing to the softer nature of the alloy and the tendency for obsolete vessels to be melted down and recast. As such, pewter examples provide important insight into the wider spectrum of lighting used in Stuart England, where pewter was favoured for its affordability and soft silvery lustre, complementing both modest and genteel households.
