Description

Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. Oil on oak panel, bust length, in a black bejewelled dress with golden embroidery and a head dress of pearls encrusted with precious stones. This portrait is based on the Darnley portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The Darnley portrait was without doubt the most influential of the whole reign, being widely used by painters of every status and quality, with the image being set into different arrangements of dress and jewels.

Provenance: Martha Hyder collection (image here shown on wall) then another important private American collector.
