Description
A large English Delftware plate, finely painted in cobalt blue with the figure of a lady holding flowers within a stylised garden landscape, flanked by trees and fencing beneath a cloudy sky. The central figure wears a full-skirted gown typical of early 18th-century fashion, her elongated form rendered in the distinctive naïve style associated with English Delftware figure painting.
This plate demonstrates the English potters’ response to imported Chinese porcelain, using tin-glazed earthenware as a medium for fashionable imagery. The use of a monochrome blue palette, together with the pastoral subject, reflects both continental influences and a growing domestic taste for decorative Delftware intended for display as much as for use.
