Description

A late Gothic brass alms dish of the Omphalos type, with a pronounced central boss surrounded by a symmetrical arrangement of foliate and bud motifs, alternating with fleur-de-lis and tongue-like leaves, all contained within a broad plain rim. The decoration is crisply executed in relief, radiating outward from the centre to emphasise harmony and order.
This form of dish derives from the Nuremberg brass workshops, which by the late fifteenth century had become the preeminent producers of alms dishes for ecclesiastical use throughout Europe. Known as Omphalos types (from the Greek for “navel”), these dishes take their name from the raised central boss, which both strengthened the metal form and provided a symbolic focus. The circular layout and radiating ornament echoed the order of creation, while the central boss was often interpreted as an image of divine perfection or the cosmos.
Used in liturgical settings to collect offerings during Mass, alms dishes such as this combined practical function with theological symbolism, embodying the role of charity within Christian life. Their gleaming brass surfaces and rich ornament also provided a striking visual presence on church altars and in sacristies.

This dish belongs to a small and rare transitional decorative group, bridging the vocabulary of late Gothic foliage with early Renaissance order and symmetry. As noted by Klaus Tiedemann in Nuremberg Alms Dishes, these types represent one of the more highly decorative and sought-after variants within the wide production of Nuremberg brassfounders.
