Description
A late Gothic oak chest of unusually small proportions, finely constructed with a two-panel front carved in deep linenfold and retaining its original wrought-iron lockplate. The framed front is crisply detailed, with the sides and top of panelled construction, the whole showing a rich, centuries-deep patina.
The compact scale of this chest marks it out from larger domestic examples, suggesting a more specialised use — perhaps for valuables, documents, or personal possessions. Linenfold, the most enduring Gothic motif, echoed the folds of drapery or parchment and was widely employed in church and courtly furnishings. Its presence here connects the chest directly with the visual language of the late Middle Ages, where ecclesiastical and secular styles overlapped.
Small Gothic chests of this date and survival are exceptionally scarce, particularly with their original ironwork intact. Comparable examples are preserved in major collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Musée de Cluny, and the Gruuthuse Museum in Bruges.
