Description
A finely cast late Gothic brass pricket candlestick, of substantial weight and bold form, with a wide circular drip pan supporting a tall pricket for holding a large wax candle. The stem is turned with stepped mouldings above a compressed knop and raised on a broad, tiered base of typical Flemish design.
Candlesticks of this type were produced in the Low Countries during the late 15th century, primarily for ecclesiastical use. Their robust construction and broad drip pans reflect their function for altar lighting, designed to carry heavy beeswax candles that illuminated churches and chapels. The survival of such an example in excellent condition is rare, as many were later melted down or re-cast during the 16th and 17th centuries.
