Description
A finely proportioned Henry VIII joined oak chest of unusually small scale, the front with twin linenfold panels framed by simple moulded stiles and rails, the top with two plain panels. The linenfold is crisply carved, its folds deeply cut to catch the light, while the compact format suggests a specialised commission rather than general storage. The chest retains an early surface, with later replacement lockplate, yet its essential structure remains original throughout.
Chests of this size are seldom encountered, as most 16th-century examples were larger and intended for clothing, textiles, or bedding. This piece likely served in a domestic chamber or ecclesiastical setting where precious items — documents, plate, or vestments — required secure yet portable housing. The refined joinery, combined with the diminutive scale, marks this as a highly individual survival from the reign of Henry VIII.
