Description

Henry VIII oak boarded chest, circa 1520 – 1540, I C stamped to the front and lid, this chest is distinctive for its relatively shallow carving, which is characteristic of secular work from the late Gothic period. The simple geometric forms executed with sharp cleans cuts produced by the V-gouge chisel. A near indentical example sold in the Clive Sherwood sale, Sothebys, 22 May 2002, lot number 53.
