Description
An early Tudor oak counter or merchant’s table, dating to the reign of Henry VIII, carved on both the front and reverse with bold scrolling foliage in the Renaissance manner, with linenfold side panels to the ends.
The table retains its original carved panels and stiles, the large-scale foliate design (feuilles) executed in high relief. The carving is worked on both front and back, confirming the piece’s original function as a freestanding counter, intended to be viewed from all sides.
Beneath the frame, the underside still shows the grooves where the original base boards were set, providing strong evidence for its first use as a counter or merchant’s table with a sliding or hinged top, designed for practical storage and daily use in commercial or administrative settings. In the 19th century, the original top was replaced, and at the same time three drawers were introduced to the front, cut directly from the original framing and panels. Despite these later interventions, the height, stiles, and core structure remain wholly original to the Henry VIII period.
