Description

Henry VIII oak recess frame, of rectangular form with a shallow four-centred (Tudor) arched head, the spandrels carved in relief with scrolling foliage bearing large pomegranate fruits. The oak of pale, dry surface, with old patch repairs and a later timber backing added for stability. Only 2 inches in depth, the frame was almost certainly intended to enclose a recess or niche rather than serving as a structural window or door.

The pomegranate was one of the great emblems of the Tudor court, closely associated with Katherine of Aragon, first queen of Henry VIII, symbolising fertility and eternal life. This powerful dynastic motif, combined with the elegant arch profile, firmly places the frame within the decorative vocabulary of the Henry VIII period. Almost certainly of East Anglian origin, where such richly carved work is well recorded in both domestic and ecclesiastical settings.
