Description
English delftware sugar pot, finely painted in cobalt blue, of cylindrical form with two loop handles and a domed cover with knop finial, the body is decorated with a rustic riverside scene depicting cottages, trees and a sailing vessel, while the cover is adorned with scrolling foliate ornament. The handles are highlighted with dotted blue decoration, a typical feature of English delftware of the late 17th and early 18th century. Minor fritting and small glaze losses, typical of tin-glazed earthenware.
Examples of comparable form and decoration can be found in the collections of the Museum of London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrating the close relationship between English delftware and its Dutch prototypes, while retaining distinctly local traits.
