Description

Dutch 17th century carved oak panel, originally part of a larger piece of furniture—likely a chest, cupboard (kast), or a bed frame. The panel depicts a classical grotesque figure of a mermaid or siren, shown with a bifurcated fishtail that coils into volutes, holding a comb and mirror, traditional attributes symbolising vanity and seduction. The figure is framed by scrolling foliage and stylised rosettes, all carved in relief with a stippled ground for added texture. Set in a later frame.

The use of mythological figures such as mermaids was common in Dutch decorative arts of the 17th century, influenced by Renaissance grotesque ornament. Panels of this type were used both for narrative symbolism and to display the carver’s technical skill.
