Description
Italian maiolica albarello, of tall waisted cylindrical form with everted rim. Decorated in a vivid cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed ground, the body painted with bold scrolling foliage and stylised floral motifs, framed by horizontal blue bands. The broad central panel has been left blank, originally intended to be inscribed with the name of the medicinal contents once in use within the apothecary.
These pharmacy jars were made for the storage of herbs, ointments, and dry drugs, and would have formed part of the impressive displays in early apothecary shops. The striking blue-and-white palette, influenced by both Islamic pottery and imported Chinese porcelain, was highly fashionable in Italy during the early 17th century and anticipated the later delftware traditions of Northern Europe.
Condition: Expected wear with small frits and glaze losses to the rim and base, entirely consistent with age and use. The decoration remains clear and vibrant.
