Description
A rare and finely carved English oak portrait panel of the reign of Henry VIII, the upper section showing a half-length bust of a female figure set within a laurel wreath roundel. Beneath, a flowing scroll cartouche is placed above a large five-petalled Tudor rose, flanked by naturalistic leaves.
The portrait type, with angular features and English hood, suggests representation of one of Henry VIII’s six consorts, possibly Katherine of Aragon or Jane Seymour, presented here as an emblem of dynastic union and fecundity. The laurel wreath, a classical device of honour and triumph, emphasises her elevated status, while the Tudor rose below reinforces dynastic legitimacy and continuity.
