Description

A finely potted Italian maiolica albarello drug jar, of cylindrical waisted form, decorated in blue on a white ground with birds perched among stylised foliage and trees, within double line borders. The decoration reflects the influence of imported Chinese porcelain on Italian ceramic design during the later 17th century, when blue and white became the dominant palette across Italian workshops.

Albarelli of this type were made for apothecary use, originally intended to hold dried herbs or medicinal compounds. The avian imagery carried symbolic connotations of vitality and spiritual well-being, appropriate to the healing contents once stored within.
