Description

A late James I joined oak upholstered stool, circa 1620, of restrained architectural form.

The rectangular upholstered seat is raised on four well-drawn column-turned legs, each with a square upper block and foot, united by plain low stretcher rails. The simplicity of the frame, together with the accomplished turnings and balanced proportions, is characteristic of English joined furniture of the early 17th century.

The oak has developed a rich, warm colour and well-patinated surface, with the expected marks and wear associated with some four centuries of use.

Of particular decorative interest is the seat, which was later upholstered with a fragment of late 16th-century tapestry. The tapestry, woven in a subdued palette of blue-green, ochre, cream and red, displays scrolling foliate ornament and is secured around the seat with close-set brass-headed studs.

Upholstered stools were an established feature of the English interior well before 1600. The Hardwick Hall Inventories of 1601 record no fewer than seventy-three upholstered stools, suggesting both their prevalence and the variety of textile coverings employed. Surviving examples are considerably rarer, particularly with early coverings intact. The present stool, with its joined oak base and later-applied late 16th-century tapestry fragment, reflects the historic practice of preserving and reusing valuable textiles as upholstery.
