Description
A finely painted late 17th-century Delftware charger, decorated in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed ground. The central scene depicts a group of four figures seated before two classical columns, beneath a festoon of drapery and stylised floral pendants, suggestive of an architectural or theatrical setting. The composition reflects the Dutch fascination with both biblical and pastoral subjects, often filtered through chinoiserie and contemporary genre imagery.
The broad cavetto and rim are divided into alternating panels enclosing reserves of stylised foliage, floral scrolls, and figures in landscape settings, a design scheme derived from Chinese Kraak porcelain of the late Ming period. Delft potters adapted these imported prototypes to suit European tastes, producing large chargers such as this for display on buffets and wall mounts.
