Kraak Delftware plate

A fine and large Delftware charger, painted in the Kraak style with a Chinese-inspired garden scene. The central medallion depicts a figure in flowing robes within a stylised landscape of rocks, fencing, and bamboo beneath a canopy of trees, enclosed within a scrolling border. The cavetto and broad rim are divided into alternating panels of floral sprays, precious objects, and stylised motifs, all executed in rich cobalt blue.
This plate is a characteristic example of the Dutch interpretation of Chinese export porcelain. The so-called “Kraak” style, originally named after the Portuguese carracks that carried porcelain from China to Europe, was widely imitated in Delft during the late 17th century, when demand for blue-and-white wares far exceeded imports from the East.
Chargers of this size and decoration were highly prized for display as well as use, reflecting the fascination with Asian luxury goods and their adaptation into European taste.
