Description

A finely painted Renaissance albarello jar of cylindrical form, decorated in vivid polychrome glazes with winged putti enclosed within roundels, set against scrolling foliate ornament. The broad palette of turquoise, ochre, manganese and green reflects the influence of Naples and Southern Italian maiolica workshops, which flourished during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Comparable examples are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza, demonstrating the rarity of Southern Italian pharmacy jars decorated with figural motifs.
