Description
A finely painted large Delftware plate in the Kraak style, measuring 13 ¾ inches (35 cm) in diameter, with a gently everted rim and shallow cavetto. Executed in blue on a white tin-glazed ground, the decoration takes direct inspiration from late Ming porcelain imported to Europe during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
The central reserve depicts a Chinese figure scene, set within a garden landscape, flanked by columns and architectural motifs, with further foliage and rockwork details. This design recalls the fascination in the Dutch Republic for exotic imagery drawn from Chinese porcelain, prints, and textiles, reinterpreted through the lens of Delft potters.
Surrounding the centre is a broad rim divided into alternating panels of floral sprays and stylised rockwork vignettes, echoing the panelled borders of imported Ming Kraak porcelain. The painterly style, with its fluid brushwork and varying washes of cobalt blue, demonstrates the distinctive Dutch approach to rendering Chinese-inspired ornament.
