Description

Exceptionally large joined and boarded oak box, the panelled, moulded top above a front carved in low relief with a rising plant spray beneath the lock flanked by a pair of addorsed, cock-like birds amid scrolling vinework and rosettes; sides and back plain boarded; original bold base moulding running the perimeter. later iron hasp and lock plate plate; interior plain. The generous proportions (38¼ in) place this above the usual “bible box” size, suggesting use for muniments, household linen or plate and intended to sit on a table, counter or directly on the floor.

The lively avian frieze—birds confronting a central “tree of life”—belongs to a well-known mid-17th-century decorative vocabulary found on boxes from the West Country and the Severn–Wye region, where addorsed birds, gryphon- or cockatrice-like, populate foliate scrolls. The panelled lid is an uncommon refinement on boxes of this type and date.
