Description
A finely matched pair of monochrome pharmaceutical albarelli, each of tall waisted cylindrical form with slightly everted rims and plain moulded bands at the neck and foot. Covered in rich tin-glazed monochrome blues, the first jar displays a soft, matte sky-blue ground, while the second is coated in a deep, mottled cobalt glaze characteristic of mid-17th-century Talavera production. The thick tin glazes exhibit the subtle pinholing, pooled edges, and slightly opaque, creamy surface associated with Spanish maiolica of this period.
The bodies are thrown in a distinctive Hispanic waisted profile—slender, architectural, and marginally more robust at the shoulder than their Italian or Dutch counterparts—while the bases reveal the typical buff earthenware fabric and glaze contraction of Talavera workshops. The pair would originally have been used in a pharmacy or monastic dispensary, their plain surfaces once carrying paper or parchment labels identifying herbs, electuaries, or mineral compounds.
