Description

Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in cobalt blue.
A superb large-scale Delftware ewer of elongated pear shape with tall neck and loop handle, painted in brilliant cobalt blue with a continuous Chinese-inspired garden scene. The decoration shows figures among rocks, trees, and pavilions beside a flowing river and stylised waterfall, bordered at the base with vertical lappets and around the neck with a floral and scrollwork frieze. The handle painted with dotted foliate motifs.

This impressive ewer belongs to the mature phase of Delft production in the late 17th century, when the city’s potteries had mastered the use of high-quality tin glaze and adopted forms derived from Chinese Transitional porcelain. The boldly painted landscape and large proportions reflect the ambition of Delft decorators to rival imported wares from Jingdezhen, adapting Far Eastern imagery to European tastes.
