Description

Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in blue, green, manganese and iron-red
A finely painted Dutch Delft charger, the centre decorated with a dancing musician within a circular reserve framed by stylised foliage and tall sponged orange trees, surrounded by a vibrant border of scrolling tulips and carnations, and a broad outer band of alternating blue and red ogee motifs. The composition is typical of the exuberant late 17th-century Delft taste, combining Italian maiolica and Chinese Kraak porcelain influences with a distinctly Dutch floral rhythm.

Chargers of this lively palette and painterly freedom were among the most popular decorative wares of the late Golden Age, displayed on dressers and mantelpieces across the Netherlands and exported widely to England.
