Description
A fine Renaissance brass pricket candlestick of imposing form, with tall central pricket rising above a broad drip pan, supported on a boldly turned baluster stem with pronounced bulbous knop, set on a moulded circular base. The sculptural stem, with its swelling baluster and compressed rings, reflects the architectural vocabulary of the late Renaissance, translating the rhythm of classical columns into brasswork.
Pricket candlesticks of this type were cast in sections using sand moulds and assembled by specialist founders in the Low Countries, then one of Europe’s leading centres of brass production. Their primary function was liturgical, providing stable candlelight on altars and in chapels, but their form also carried symbolic weight: the upright pricket evoking the light of faith, the swelling stem a display of Renaissance design, and the wide base ensuring both practicality and presence.
