Description

Of panelled construction, the front with three bays, the central panel finely carved in relief with a biblical scene traditionally interpreted as Adam (possibly Adam and Eve, or the Creation of Eve), set within a bold moulded architectural framework. The central panel is flanked by paired acanthus-leaf carved pilasters, the outer bays each with raised rectangular panels within strapwork-moulded borders. The top and bottom rails are enriched with continuous guilloche carving, while the stiles are worked with stylised foliage.
This chest represents a rare form of Elizabethan joinery in which figural biblical carving replaces the more typical geometric and strapwork motifs. Its iconographic subject, combined with the architectural framing, reflects the influence of continental Renaissance design adapted for the English provincial household. It is possible that the chest once formed part of a pair, with the companion panel carved to depict Eve, thus completing the narrative cycle.

The figural panel at the centre depicts Adam reclining in the Garden of Eden, in the moment of Creation, an extremely rare subject for an English chest of this period. The narrative derives from Genesis 2, when Eve is formed from Adam’s side, and would have carried strong marital and moral symbolism for its original owners. The bold and somewhat naïve carving reflects the hand of a provincial carver working under Renaissance influence, likely drawing upon continental print sources. Its inclusion within a chest of otherwise architectural design is striking, suggesting this piece was either commissioned for a particular patron or formed part of a matching pair — one chest with Adam, the other with Eve — intended to symbolise conjugal unity.
