Description
A small late Gothic oak cupboard of architectural form, the twin doors carved in high relief with vertical linenfold panels below pointed-arched tracery heads. The doors are divided by an applied central mullion carved as a miniature buttress with moulded bases and foliate Gothic ornament, a motif closely associated with Bruges and Ghent workshop production at the turn of the sixteenth century. Each door retains its original iron strapwork hinges with cusped terminals and hand-forged nails. The original iron lock is preserved and still engages.
The body is constructed with thick oak stiles and rails joined by pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, the front resting on two stile-form feet (both sympathetically patched in the past, as expected in furniture of this age). The carved surfaces retain a dry, untouched patination.
A scarce survival of Flemish late Gothic domestic furniture, distinguished by its intact architectural carving, original ironwork, and rare small scale.
