Description
An exceptional late Gothic oak cupboard of compact yet highly architectural form, retaining its original ironwork and tracery-carved panels. The upper section with a cupboard door carved with flamboyant Gothic tracery, the panels framed within broad muntins, and mounted with finely decorated, pierced lock plates and wrought-iron strap hinges. The tracery motifs, with their pointed arches, cusping and foliate infill, recall the stonework of late 15th-century Netherlandish churches and civic buildings, here translated into the medium of oak furniture.
Below, another door carved with interlaced Gothic strapwork, flanked by quatrefoil tracery panels. The sides are enriched with deep linenfold panels, an archetypal motif of the late Gothic period, prized for its architectural resonance and play of light and shadow. The whole stands on extended stile supports joined by a pot-board base — a form particularly associated with Flemish and northern European cupboards of the period.
The cupboard survives in remarkable condition, its ironwork, tracery and linenfold panels crisp and of high quality, representing the finest cabinetmaking of its time. Such cupboards were often commissioned for wealthy burghers or ecclesiastical patrons, designed both to store and to display precious household items, while also serving as a statement of piety and status.
