Description
A late Gothic sculpture of Christ at Rest, carved in walnut. Christ is shown seated on a block, crowned with thorns and bound with ropes, his hands resting before him in a gesture of submission. His torso is rendered with taut musculature and finely detailed anatomy, while his expressive face and downcast gaze capture both physical suffering and spiritual resignation.
This subject, also known as the Man of Sorrows or Christ on the Cold Stone, was especially popular in the Low Countries at the turn of the 16th century, where Antwerp workshops produced powerful devotional images emphasising Christ’s humanity and sacrifice. Figures of this scale were intended for display in chapels or churches, providing the faithful with a vivid focus for meditation on the Passion.
The survival of such a large walnut figure with expressive carving, original ropes, and documented provenance is rare. A label on the reverse identifies it as formerly in the Collection Vecht, Amsterdam (A. Vecht & Co., noted Dutch dealers in sculpture and fine art).
