Description
A late Gothic sculpture of St John the Evangelist, carved in walnut and retaining traces of its original polychromy. The youthful apostle is depicted clean-shaven, with curling hair and long flowing robes, his right hand raised as if to hold a chalice or book — both traditional attributes associated with his role as evangelist and visionary author of the Apocalypse.
At over 35 inches high, this imposing figure was likely created for an altarpiece or church setting, where it would have formed part of a larger cycle of the Apostles. The rhythmic folds of the drapery, the sensitive modelling of the face, and the elegant contrapposto stance reflect the refinement of Netherlandish carving at the transition from the Gothic to the early Renaissance.
The sculpture retains traces of its original polychromy, with remnants of red pigment and gilding visible in the folds of the drapery. Such survival, though fragmentary, is characteristic of Netherlandish late Gothic sculpture and provides a valuable witness to the work’s original appearance as a richly painted and gilded devotional image.
Large-scale Netherlandish walnut saints of this period are increasingly rare to survive with such completeness. The figure’s size, presence, and surface traces make it a significant example of late Gothic devotional sculpture.
