Description
A fine mid-16th century cast bronze cauldron, of rounded form with moulded horizontal banding beneath the rim, angular side handles, and three splayed legs. The body is inscribed with the letters I F H W, most likely the initials of the original owner or household, an uncommon feature that personalises the vessel and marks it as a commissioned piece.
Cauldrons of this type were cast in sand moulds in the great foundries of Northern Germany, notably Brunswick and Lüneburg, which dominated the export trade in domestic metalware during the Renaissance. The form — squat, robust, and with sharply angled lugs — is characteristic of German production, distinguishing it from the more flared and slender cauldrons of the Low Countries.
