Description
A rare pair of deeply carved oak relief panels, each centred by a classical urn issuing abundant fruit and foliage, framed by scrolling acanthus with pendant clusters of grapes, and flanked by pairs of birds in lively attitudes. The carving is executed with notable depth and precision, the undercutting of the scrolls and the naturalism of the fruit reflecting the technical virtuosity of the workshop.
The iconography draws upon the rich symbolic vocabulary of the Dutch Golden Age. The overflowing urn signifies abundance, prosperity, and domestic plenty, while the grapes hold both Eucharistic associations and connotations of fertility and conviviality. The paired birds reinforce themes of harmony, love, and vigilance. Together, the imagery reflects the cultural ideals of prosperity, faith, and order that underpinned 17th-century Dutch domestic and civic life.
