Description
A finely carved Malines (Mechelen) statuette of the Virgin and Child, executed in oak and retaining much of its original polychromy. The Virgin is shown standing on an octagonal base, robed in a red undergarment and white mantle, supporting the Christ Child on her left arm. The Child clasps an orb, emblematic of his dominion over the world.
While many Malines statuettes of this period were carved in limewood, the present example is executed in oak, a harder and more durable material favoured in the Low Countries for larger-scale sculpture and ecclesiastical furnishings. This use of oak underlines both the Netherlandish origin and the high quality of the work.
Produced in Mechelen in the first half of the 16th century, such statuettes were intended for domestic devotion, exported widely across Europe, and remain among the most recognisable products of Brabantine woodcarving. The combination of delicate scale, original paint surface, and rare oak construction make this a particularly desirable example.
