Description
A fine mid-18th century Liverpool delftware plate with a pie-crust rim, painted in cobalt blue with a Chinoiserie garden scene. At the centre, a figure in Eastern dress is seated beside stylised rockwork and a flowering vase beneath an abundance of oversized floral sprays, framed by a landscape setting with a fence and water motif. The wide border is enriched with alternating floral panels and a diaper trellis pattern, with further stylised blossoms at intervals.
This type of decoration reflects the European fascination with Chinese porcelain and the exoticised imagery of the East, reinterpreted through the Chinoiserie style. Delftware potters in Liverpool, Bristol and London produced such wares for the fashionable domestic market, bridging the gap between imported Chinese porcelain and the later development of English porcelain manufacture.
