Description

A fine and decorative blue-and-white lobed dish, painted in the so-called “Kraak” style after imported Ming porcelains. The centre is decorated with a narrative landscape scene, showing a seated figure within a fenced riverside setting framed by stylised rockwork and trees. Surrounding this, the cavetto and rim are divided into eight radiating panels: alternating reserves with fruit and floral motifs against trellis backgrounds, and miniature vignettes of landscapes and buildings, all executed in varying washes of cobalt blue. The reverse is plain tin-glazed with typical firing marks from its support in the kiln.

The refined brushwork, strong cobalt tones, and clear adoption of Chinese Kraak panel arrangements suggest a date of c. 1650–1680. At this point, Delft workshops had reached a high level of technical skill in producing Kraak-inspired wares for the prosperous Dutch and wider European market. Comparable examples are preserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
