Description
A finely carved oak panel depicting the biblical story of the Sacrifice of Isaac. At the centre, Abraham raises a knife to slay his son Isaac, who kneels in submission, while an angel descends from the heavens to intervene. To the side stands the ram, which will serve as the sacrificial substitute. The scene is framed by architectural elements with pyramidal bosses, emphasising its devotional character.
This subject, drawn from Genesis 22, was a favoured theme of the Renaissance, embodying absolute faith and obedience to God, while prefiguring the sacrificial death of Christ. The compact format suggests use as a domestic devotional panel or as part of a larger ensemble.
