Description

Of bulbous form raised on three triangular-section legs, the rim everted and fitted with angular side handles cast in one with the body. The surface with traces of the original lathe finishing and wear consistent with early domestic use, one leg with an old firing flaw. The form and metal composition correspond closely with examples from Nuremberg and Dinant foundries, both major centres for cast-bronze domestic wares in the late Renaissance period.

Cauldrons such as this were a staple of elite and middle-class households in Northern Europe, used both for open-hearth cooking and for heating water. Their robust alloy composition and balanced design made them highly durable — many remained in service for centuries.
