Description
An elegant matched pair of Dutch tin-glazed earthenware vases of elongated baluster or gu-shaped form, each painted in a strong cobalt blue with alternating figural and floral panels. The principal scenes depict gentlemen and attendants in stylised garden landscapes, surrounded by pavilions and scrolling clouds, while the neck and foot are decorated with ornamental lambrequin and foliate motifs within shaped panels.
The form and decoration draw direct inspiration from Chinese Transitional and early Kangxi blue-and-white porcelain, widely imported into the Netherlands through the Dutch East India Company in the late 17th century. Delft potters, notably those active at De Metaale Pot, De Porceleyne Bijl, and De Grieksche A, adapted these Eastern prototypes into richly painted, highly glazed local interpretations that catered to both domestic and export markets.
The deep, slightly granular cobalt tone, fine potted symmetry, and faint cream body visible at the footrims identify these as high-quality Delft production, probably from one of the leading factories working under VOC influence around 1680–1700.
Condition
Excellent for age, minor fritting to the footrims and mouth, one with small glaze flake, no structural restoration.
